A car bomb. A dead journalist. An unsolved "mystery".
On October 16th, 2017 Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated with a car bomb 80 meters from her home. She was a Maltese journalist writing on political corruption and links between online gambling and organized crime. Some believe these same politicians and tycoons put a hit out to kill her. A year later there has been no justice in her murder with no end in sight.
Yesterday, October 16th, 2018 protest and vigils were held all over the world to remember her and call out the Maltese government because her murder has yet to be "solved." Our classmate invited us to a vigil/march that was being held in the capital city, Valletta. It took some time and research to decide if we should go, but we decided to be conscious and critical of the spaces we were in and still show our solidarity.
Daphne is not an outlier and not only a story from Malta.
She represents justice against those corrupted by big business and politics that hide among the elite -- that are the elite. She challenged those that felt they were above the law and above the people, and when Daphne or other journalist have done this it seems to constantly end with mysterious deaths or unsolvable crimes. Everyone should follow in her steps and challenge the powers around you, hold people accountable, hold politicians responsible, and seek justice and truth.
Daphne Caruana Galizia was an honest Maltese journalist who challenged people regardless of their status: her last published words, “there are crooks everywhere you look now. The situation is desperate.” Her stories still exist, frozen in time, but still relevant and important to Malta, to every country dealing with corruption, and to the free press. https://daphnecaruanagalizia.com/.
